HIV Testing Fact Sheet By Suzann Gage, OB/GYN RNC, NP, LAc

HIV or Human immunodeficiency Virus is a sexually transmitted virus passed through unsafe sex. HIV is believed by most experts to be the primary causative factor that can lead to of AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which can increase the risk of contracting life threatening infections.

We provide the same day Rapid HIV 1 & 2 Test with 15 Minute Results!

We also provide the HIV DNA Early Test, which has, in some cases, identified HIV infection in as few as 3-7 days after sexual contact. HIV DNA testing is most accurate if it has been at least 1-3 weeks or longer after sexual contact.

We provide other types of HIV testing as well such as the standard HIV antibody ELISA test using either blood or urine, the HIV p24 antigen, the HIV RNA Viral Load Test and T-Cell Subsets.

Our knowledgeable and nonjudgmental staff of HIV health care professionals have over 37 years of experience in HIV testing and STD testing and treatment. In 1986 we became one of the very first medical facilities in the Unites States to provide HIV testing to the public. WE CARE about your health!

How HIV Testing is Done

Rapid HIV 1 & 2 testing with 15 minutes results simply requires a drop of blood from a finger stick. The Rapid HIV test looks for antibodies that the immune system forms to fight HIV. In the majority of cases HIV antibodies can easily be found 3-4 weeks after becoming infected. HIV antibodies have even been found in as few as 2 weeks after becoming infected, in some cases. Experts recommend that you repeat the HIV antibody test 3 months later and even 6 months later just to double check.

The HIV DNA Early Test, also called the HIV DNA by PCR test, requires a tube of blood that is sent to a lab. The HIV DNA test has identified evidence of DNA from HIV in the blood in as few as 3-7 days after becoming infected, which is the soonest that you can detect HIV in a test. Results are available normally in 2-4 working days (most cases). HIV DNA testing is considered most accurate if it has been 1-3 weeks or longer after becoming infected.

HIV Symptoms

HIV may NOT cause ANY symptoms!

It is common for many people to not have symptoms right away after becoming infected with HIV.

You simply cannot tell if you are infected with HIV based on symptoms alone!

If you DO have symptoms, HIV symptoms can include:

  • Flu like symptoms, low-grade fever, body aches, fatigue
  • Swollen, sore lymph nodes
  • Coated throat or tongue
  • Throat irritation
  • Vaginal yeast
  • Vaginal itching
  • Diarrhea, weight loss
  • White patches or lesions in the mouth
  • Difficulty breathing, dry cough, pneumonia
  • Skin rash or reddish, pink, purple or brownish skin blotches

NOTE: Most people with these symptoms do not have HIV. They may have other health issues.

Who Should Test for HIV?

If you have any of these symptoms after sexual contact with a partner you should test for HIV!
If you've had unsafe sex with partners who's sexual past is unknown you should test for HIV!
If you have any doubts after sex, even if you have NO symptoms, you should test for HIV!

Progressive Health Services has seen patients test positive for HIV without ever having ANY symptoms, even for many years after becoming infected!

HIV Transmission

If you have ever had unprotected sex and you are not absolutely sure of your partner's sexual history… you could be at risk for becoming infected with HIV and not know it!

If infected, HIV can be found in blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk, feces, and open cuts or sores anywhere on or inside the body including the mouth, nose, vagina or anus. In some cases HIV has also been found in saliva, probably from cuts or sores in the mouth or bleeding gums.

HIV can be sexually transmitted by any type of sex including:

Sex where infected semen gets in or on the anus, vagina, mouth, penis, eye or broken skin.
Sex where infected vaginal fluids get in or on the penis, mouth, vulva, anus, eye or broken skin.
Sex where infected blood gets in or on the penis, vagina, mouth, anus, eye or broken skin.
Sex where infected breast milk gets in or on the penis, vagina, mouth, anus, eye or broken skin.

HIV has also been transmitted by:

Reusing or sharing contaminated recreational IV drug needles
Reusing or sharing contaminated tattoo needles
Sharing contaminated cocaine straws
Blood transfusions and blood products, now very rare due to mandatory testing of donated blood

HIV Test Results

If you test negative, and it has been a very short time since you have had any concern of becoming infected with HIV, we encourage you to come back and repeat testing a month later to double check. If you test too soon after a risk of becoming infected with HIV you could get negative test result even though you are infected. Additionally, we strongly recommend testing for other STDs as well. You can become infected with other STDs in the same way, and at the same time, that you become infected with HIV, and it is possible to have other STDs without symptoms. Using condoms and other Safer Sex practices can dramatically reduce your risk of becoming infected with HIV.
